What Stonebridge City Farm Stands for.

Volunteers and Clients are at the heart of everything that we do here. The thinking behind the project is to offer real work experience to people who are excluded from paid work due to a learning or physical disability or difficulty. We also offer experience to individuals who may have been unable to work due to mental health problems or addictions.

By opening up opportunities to work on the farm, volunteers and clients learn how to get on with others in a group situation, take on tasks for themselves and to support or be supported by others depending on ability.

Over time they will build up confidence in their abilities and increase their self esteem. Stonebridge offers an environment for individuals to express themselves and learn social skills as well as picking up experience of working.

Volunteers and clients time with us varies. Some have been with us for 12 years! most stay for a couple of years and then move on, to college, employment or further training.

Stonebridge City Farm, a poem by Ron Gardner

You can stroll back into childhood
At Stonebridge City Farm -
The animals will lure you there
Such innocent, earthly charm.
We look Olivia and Amy
Grandaughters, as our guide
To this wonderland of creatures
With no deviousness to hide.
Hands outstretched, the children
Offered food to gatherings of goats
Who looked and licked and gobbled
As though being handed ten pound notes.
The big fat sow, however,
With the piglet feeding at her teat,
Content to snuffle at the grass,
Ignored the hand-held treat.
Another field was white with geese
All snuggled in the grass
The pond was waiting for them
But today they let it pass.
A second pond had wiggly things
Darting here and there
And lethargic little water-snails.
These things made the children stare.
A friendly man called out to us
To hurry come and see
A hip - hop frog a leaping
In a bed of green parsley.
Amy was excited
Had not seen one before
She bent to see it closely
Nature study was no chore.
Then they sat to stroke a rabbit
And nurse a guinea pig
We, too, reached out to touch them
Soft, warm, not very big
Another friendly farm hand
Spoke about the bees.

We tasted their pure honey
It was truly the bees knees.
He pulled out a box of honey combs
As the bees had left it now
Amy explored it with her hands
The farmer showed her how.
We saw and heard the chickens
One handsome cockerel
Lifted its beak to give
A cock-a-doodle-doo
Worthy to be included
In an avian Who's Who.
A cage of fluttering rainbows
Flitting from perch to pole
Would capture admiration
From every living soul.
And sun-flowers bearing down on us,
Trees with apples thick on boughs,
Notices declaring names
For ponies, pigs and cows.
And with all this a little park
With slides and things to climb
Where children (and some grand pa pas)
Can have a vigorous time.
And finally, the café where,
Whilst taking cake and tea,
You can look at photographs and posters
Giving Stonebridge history.
Thank you men and women
Who for nearly thirty years
Have worked to make this special place
Worth far more than just three cheers.
